- I you are looking for a fax/modem that does not load down the
- mainboard microprocessor every time it sends a fax then you might want
- to consider a CAS modem. Class 1 offloads everything to the
- microprocessor, Class 2 takes on some of the task with the chipset on
- the board, Class 2.0 reportedly does even more of its work (but how
- would be know since very little softwear is out there) and CAS does
- almost all of its own work.
-
- The key? At least with Intel and PUREDATA is the on board
- co-processor.
-
- CAS modems are a little more tricky to set-up. The data side takes one
- IRQ and the fax side another, and you must load a device driver or a
- TSR (even with WIN 95).
-
- The results are well worth it.
-
- I currently use an Intel 400i, but I just got in my new PUREDATA 500.
- The jury is still out on the new one..I think they will get the
- drivers right soon.
